ARCO: New Station Design Seeks Efficient, Environmentally Attractive StationsARCO - Atlantic Richfield Co.Super Service Station - May 1972 Staff Writer A new design program is being launched by Atlantic Richfield Co. to make its future service stations "more environmentally attractive and efficient, with a uniform "family appearance" from coast to coast," according to Louis M Ream, Jr., executive vice president. this is a continuation of the company's "new look" program which began 17 months ago.
Adapted from a design by Victor Christ-Janer, architect of New Canaan, Conn., the new stations will maintain continuity through a basic resemblance. Flexibility in roof line, materials and color will permit bending into a variety of community environments. The design was developed to meet three constant objectives: an attractive stopping place, with ample weather protection; a business operation that it an attribute to the community and readily acceptable to the local planning board; a pleasant and functionally efficient place of business that will attract a high caliber of dealer. Forerunners of new station concept were built at Brookhaven, Pa., and Barrington, Ill. The variable aspects are being further tested in stations now being constructed at Boston, Mass.; Northbrook, Ill.; Exton, Pa.; and Santa Ana, Calif. Most of the new stations will have rear or side entry to bays. Plain, single columned supports for the canopy and the absence of merchandise display racks are part of the plan to provide a clean, uncluttered appearance. The lighting system is designed to eliminate glare with recessed and low level fixtures. Ground cover and planters are placed throughout the area, and a grouping of trees adjoining one end of the building is an integral part of the landscaping. Further weather protection is provided by a six-foot roof overhang around the building. Inside, a lounge is equipped with vending machines and adjoins a glass enclosed office area. Clutter in the bays is minimized with shelving and a locked storage area.
